Does Everything Really Happen for a Reason?

By Sunny Dawn Johnston

When we are going through a difficult period in our lives, or are dealing with a crisis, it can feel like our lives are over. As we face challenging times, many well-meaning people will say things like “well, everything happens for a reason,” or “behind every gray cloud, there’s a silver lining.” Oftentimes, it is these types of statements that make us want to scream at the top of our lungs, “you just don’t understand, nothing will ever be the same” or “leave me alone … you have no idea.”

When we are in the midst of such periods, these age-old sayings can be difficult to hear, and even more difficult to believe. I get it. I have been the one to say it … and the one to scream … all at different times.

But, what if it were true? What if everything really does happen for a reason? What if we lived from a perspective that every experience that we have in life is designed to be an opportunity for growth, expansion, awareness, and dare it be said … for Love?

Most of us have, at some point in our lives, been lucky enough to have had some rough patches; but, experiences that, when looked back upon, can be seen with appreciation. Others have lived through downright catastrophes – where there seems to be no good reason whatsoever. Broken hearts, financial ruin, abuse or even the death of a loved one can leave us with more questions than answers. The why’s of it all, no doubt, cause pain, sadness, anger, illness and depression. We all see these challenges differently. For some, the pain is so devastating that they can’t get out of bed; while others can take what happened, and turn that energy into motivation. Why such different responses in similar circumstances?

It’s the way we choose to see things. That’s what makes the difference.

We have an opportunity, in every minute of every day, to see things as a challenge – or to see things that happen as a gift. What at first appeared to be dire circumstances can ultimately be an opportunity for blessings, synchronicities and miracles. But, in order to see the blessings, we have to change our perspective – by changing our experience of it.

So, how do we get there?

Asking these questions, with an open heart and mind, can help you find peace and happiness:

  • What is the value of the experience?
  • What is the gift?
  • What have I learned?
  • How have I grown?

As human beings, it can be hard to believe that everything is happening for a higher and greater good when “bad” things do happen. However, when we have an opportunity to see it from a different perspective – often years down the road – it can change our lives for the better.

One example is a new client of mine that came to see me recently. I will call her Sally. Sally made an appointment with me for a mediumship reading because she was severely depressed and tired of living life that way. Her father had died the previous year and she was devastated. She felt lost without him. The loss had affected every aspect of her life and she was suffering.

As we sat together, her father appeared to me. He shared things with her that only he and Sally would know. His humor came through … his “colorful” personality. These were things she had missed so much. He was making jokes and teasing her, and she felt as if he was right there with her in that room.

She was elated and full of life again. He even scolded her about her greatest fear – like a dad would – by saying it was nonsense. Her dad told her, rather directly, “Quit thinking I won’t be there to walk you down the aisle. Where else would I be when my baby is getting married?” She burst into tears. Hearing all of this confirmed for her that life exists after death. This experience reminded her that he is around, still participating in her life, just in a different form. She is now embracing her new relationship with her father – looking for the signs from him, and recognizing the ones that were always there, but she just couldn’t see them in her grief.

Of course, Sally still misses her dad in his earthly form, but she is now happy and at peace knowing he is still “here.”

Even in the darkest moments of our lives, a divine hand is at work. As we open to this possibility, we have an opportunity to embrace a new way of seeing things. I’m not saying it is easy. This life we chose right now is one of great contrast. However, if we choose to focus our attention on the gifts, the love, the blessings … we experience more of them. Pure and simple!
